Something Traditional
Last Wednesday was the date of my country's Independence Day (71 years free!), and it was an eventful day. Soon after, I realised that this was going to be my last time celebrating my country's Independence Day inside my country. Chances are, I'll already be studying abroad by next year, and 3 years after that. So I wanted to somehow show a sense of pride for my nation. Hence, this photoshoot.
A kebaya, according to Google, is a light, loose tunic worn by women in Malaysia, Indonesia, and other Southeast Asian countries. No offense Malaysia, but I think my country deserves ownership over this one.
I loved wearing it (it was a little big around the waist, but still). In a glance, it obviously looks like your typical ethnic southeast Asian traditional wear. However, I am absolutely in love with both the colour and the intricate hand-sewn details resembling flowers around the front and sides. It gives a sense of femininity. Many other varieties of flowers were available, so a lot of these actually come in different colours and styles. It's also quite practical since I get to wear it with anything like any casual top I own.
There was definitely something empowering about wearing this, not only because it reflected my nation, but because it became a symbol of two things I know I am: An Indonesian, and a feminist.
Does your country have a certain traditional piece that you love to wear or are proud of? What do you think of this one? Let me know in the comments below, I'd love to read your thoughts. :)
Until next time,

Aaaand I'm back.
I have decided against blogging for quite some time now for a handful of reasons. To name a few:
1. I'm having way too much on my plate. School is starting and there are heaps of things to deal with right now and it's been keeping me immensely busy.
2. I didn't know what to write about anymore. I'll be honest, my brain's been so exhausted that it just haven't had the time to properly generate ideas.
3. I felt like I needed to get my life together first. Not gonna lie, it's been messy. Emotionally, physically, and mentally. But I think my stability always comes from working, and from being productive. So that's what I'm going to start doing.
I'm hopeful for another start. I still want to pursue blogging all the way into my future and to actually make something out of the whole process, and it is going to take some time. However, I figured that the only thing that can take me off of the stress that life gives, is giving myself one thing I would enjoy stressing about. If that makes sense.
I changed my layout here and there, if you've noticed, and it's because I'm trying to re-brand this blog so that it can keep up with how I am right now as a person, who's growing- stumbling, but still growing nonetheless.
MUSIC: Recent Favorites
We've reached the middle of June already and I thought it was about time for me to share my most recent favourites! My last music post was quite a while ago so now I'm packed and ready with a new list of fresh tunes. I've just been obsessing over these songs so I hope you like them.
- "Wolves" - One Direction (I ended up loving this song more than I planned. It's just addicting.)
- "Can't Stop the Feeling" - Justin Timberlake (Such a good song, JT never fails to take my heart away. The ultimate feel-good song with a really cool beat you can totally dance to.)
- "Talk Me Down" - Troye Sivan (This song feels really slow and melancholic, but in a way it just consumes you. I don't know. Listen to it if you haven't, guys.)
- "This Is What You Came For" - Calvin Harris ft. Rihanna (This is kind of a fresh song and I'm just literally obsessed. So so good.)
- "Masterpiece" - Jessie J (An oldie but goodie. The lyrics are amazing and they really speak to me personally, and her vocals are flawless.)
- "Army" - Ellie Goulding (This song was played during my high school's graduation gala and I instantly fell in love with the chorus. Ellie continues to mesmerize.)
- "Til Kingdom Come" - Coldplay (I don't normally listen to Coldplay anymore but my boyfriend recommended this and I loved it the minute I heard it. So beautiful, and it just got to me in a deep, personal level at that time.)
- "Steady Me" - Hollyn (I'd never heard of this artist before but I really really like this song. It turned out to be gospel, as I realised after a while, but just a really nice tune.)
- "If It's For You" - The Overtunes (The Overtunes is a band from my home country, Indonesia, and I happen to love their music. This song's always been one of my favourites.)
- "Is It The Answer" Reality Club (This might be a little unexpected but the Reality Club is a band from Jakarta, I found it because the lead singer happens to be one of my fave YouTubers, and I listened to their first single and this turned out to be so good.)
- "Nobody" - Selena Gomez (I don't know why I loved this song so much when I heard it, but the chorus just kind of sweeps you off your feet. It's beautiful, I love it.)
- "Real Love" - Clean Bandit ft. Jess Glynne (Again, quite an old song but I listened to it again recently and fell back in love. I've always been a huge fan of Jess Glynne because of her vocals and style of music in general. SO good.)
Got any favourites? What do you think of the songs above? Leave a comment below and I'd love to hear from you since it's been a while!
Have a great week.
LIFE: Turning Seventeen
So, just a little update: I turned 17 last Friday.
Do you feel old?
Not really.
How does it feel like so far?
Messy.
So you drive now?
Never laid hands on a steering wheel in my entire life. I know, I know, I suck at turning 17.
Any wishes?
Actually, on my birthday I realised, that everything I want, and everything I need, I already have. I'm abundantly blessed, and I know this full well.
Technically, this birthday post is about a week late, but I knew that not writing about my 17th birthday on my blog would be- well, a crime. So here it is.
The thing about turning 17 is that where I come from, it's a big deal. A lot of girls hold these extravagant parties and they just make one hell of a celebration out of it. (Kind of like how Super Sweet 16s are in the US). Judging from that, I thought that turning 17 would feel glorious. I thought my life would feel like it's ~*changed*~ and that the sun would shine in a different light and my days would be different and I would be a totally new person.
None of this happened.
The days leading up to my birthday were kind of dull. Maybe it was my finals week, but I knew that even though I was going to celebrate with a fun dinner gathering with my friends and I was going to see my family and it was going to be a great birthday, I still didn't look forward to it that much. I was happy, sure, but meh, it's just a birthday.
I woke up, June 3rd, at a quarter to 5 AM (yes, my birthday weekend featured many nights of a lack of sleep) and replied to several messages my friends left me from 12 AM the night before. My boyfriend texted me that morning and so did several other people.
I was just about to get up when all of a sudden, three of my closest church friends came into my room with a plate of the breakfast menu from McDonalds (a classy meal to start my birthday), complete with a set of candles, singing Happy Birthday to me, who wasn't even fully awake yet. It was the earliest birthday surprise I've had in a while and it was so thoughtful of them.
My mom finally woke up an hour later, hugged me and wished me a happy birthday. Her gifts were really memorable: She wrote me a letter (which made me cry) and gave me a cross necklace (that I now wear daily and never take off).
After that, it was just a normal day (well, with countless people wishing me a happy birthday every time I pass by them at school). I usually would dress up for my birthday to look nicer but that day I only wore a plain white tee with black jeans and my pair of Converses. I know, right? Fashion.
We had two subjects only that Friday and the day at school basically ended with a friendly basketball game. My friends and I had a great time watching. Around noon, one of my best friends took me all the way to the first floor because she said she had something for me. Turns out, it was the most beautiful bouquet of flowers I've ever seen. (It's the one I'm holding in the first picture). I was so happy about it and I thought it was the most subtle, gorgeous, and unexpected gift.
When I got home, I finally saw my sister, brother-in-law, and my baby nephew. Knowing that my brother would finally come home later that day, I was beyond excited. Having a big family, getting to be with all of them becomes rare. The fact that we were going to be at least almost complete just made my happiness.
Another thing that made me extremely happy was that the twelve of us (my best friends and I) were finally complete that night. They all looked absolutely stunning and aside from that, they also gave me a surprise that night with an adorable cake and a video that they came together to make. The video was the sweetest thing and it was so hilarious that I almost cried. They gave me a gift of Copic markers (YES?) and a gorgeous fragrance (DOUBLE YES?) I felt so lucky to have them and it was the sweetest thing. They complete me. Period.
Before the dinner officially started, my brother-in-law carried out a few words to open up the evening. He invited some friends to come up and say a few words about me, and he even had one of my guy friends to come up and say some things about me, which in turn became hella awkward but it was cool anyway. Three of my closest friends came and said the nicest things.
Here's where it got kind of crazy. After all of that, we all closed our eyes and prayed (as we normally would). My brother-in-law led us in prayer and he also prayed for me as well, which was nice. After a few minutes, we were done and I opened my eyes only to find the biggest, most unexpected surprise that night.
Being in a long distance relationship, I knew that meant that I wouldn't be able to see my boyfriend on the big day, and I was completely fine with that. But when we opened our eyes after our prayers, there he was. In a blue sweater, holding flowers and a blue box, he was already standing in the side of the room, ready to come in. I was beyond speechless.
He walked towards me and at this point, everyone in the room was freaking out. Including me. Especially me. It turns out that my boyfriend, who lives 754 km away from me, flew into my town that day and have been getting in touch with my family for a while before my birthday to tell them that he was coming, just to be there on my birthday and surprise me. There are no words to accurately describe it. I was so close to crying (I DIDN'T though) and I couldn't even make a proper reaction to it. It felt crazy and so unreal that someone would do something so sweet. I ended up spending most of my weekend with him and it felt like the best weekend ever.
Long story short, it was an amazing birthday. We took pictures, ate dinner, and basically, the same as all my previous birthdays: The best part was being with the people I cared about. How I celebrated it wasn't nearly as important as who I got to celebrate it with. Including those I didn't even expect was going to be there.
It was a long day, but I had so much to be thankful for. I didn't look forward to it that much, but as my birthday was coming to an end, I just wanted to repeat it over and over again. I've had an amazing year and I can't wait to see what my 17th year brings (hopefully a driver's license soon, though.) I was beyond happy, and I went home that night knowing that all the best things that could possibly ever happen on my birthday, did.
This was a long post but I hope you guys liked seeing it. I'll be writing again soon.
Have a great rest of the week!
How to Be A Proper Lady
Have you ever thought that maybe, as a girl, you're not living up to other people's expectations of you? Ever wondered why you never fit the mold that society has created for the female population in general? Ever felt like your life didn't make much sense because you were living it differently than how people expect you to?
Well, nothing to worry! For this post, I constructed a list of seven steps on how to become a proper lady. Being a woman comes with plenty of requirements, so if you don't follow these, it's not acceptable to consider yourself as a proper lady at all. :)
- Wear clothes that hide every inch of your skin. As females, we do have an advantage when it comes to fashion. But as a lady, you must not reveal any skin that men might find "distracting". Play along to the dress code, even if it means you can't wear tank tops because your shoulders are too distracting for other people. :) You must cover everything. Because if you dress the way you want and a guy takes advantage of you or tries to assault you in any way, that's totally your outfit's fault. Even if you weren't wearing a small short dress. If you were wearing jeans and a man still found you appealing and tried to rape you, people will think it's because of what you were wearing, then they will completely ignore the man's lack of moral values and it'll still partly be your fault. :)
- Get married and have kids! (Or at least plan to.) If you have no plans on getting married or having kids of your own, then how dare you call yourself a woman? We were obviously made to be mothers, so God forbid you even think about not getting married or having children. It's your ~*purpose*~. You must also be excellent at cooking. Don't call yourself a woman if you can't cook properly! :)
- Be nice and accepting all the time. No matter how many men catcall you while you're walking down the street, as a lady, that's just something you have to accept. Don't lash out, just be okay with people whistling at you and randomly calling you names and checking out your body like it's a totally normal thing to happen! :) You should also be flattered every time someone compliments you, even when you know it's because they're trying to hit on you like you're nothing. Also, you must always be gentle. Never raise your voice and never speak for yourself. Rather, be reserved at all times. Always let them have the last word. Women aren't supposed to be bossy or dominant in any way.
- Don't get a job! Well you can get a job, but not a hard one because gosh, you're a woman! In relation to what I said earlier, women weren't made to be the boss in anything! It's better for ladies to stay at home, cook the meals, take care of the children, and let their men do all the work. Being independent is so naive and unnecessary. Just find a husband who will provide for you! But of course, if you still need to find a job, then stick to the simple ones. Stuff like engineering and mechanics are just way out of our league.
- You're not supposed to have a muscular or athletic body. Oh come on, ladies, stay slim! You have to know that in today's society, you either should have really great curves or a really tall slender figure. Muscular bodies just don't work for women. Society doesn't want us to look strong, but to look desirable! :) Women with too much muscle tend to "scare people away". So remember, keep it petite.
- Avoid driving. Leave it to men! We're women and you know what that means? We're horrible drivers! So just stop doing it and leave it to the guys, because if you make a small mistake on the road, people are simply going to conclude that it's because you're a woman, not because you're a normal human being who is allowed to make a few errors. :)
- Stop complaining about the wage gap! Men already have it sooooo much harder, you guys. Can you imagine having to provide for his family? Even though you have a family, it's obvious that your role is to stay at home and do all the motherly chores you were supposed to do, so you never needed a reasonable pay check anyway, right? So what if you only make 79 cents for every dollar a man makes? Just settle and deal with it!
And that's all for today. I do hope this can remind you all that as ladies, things like "powerful" or "independent" just don't fit into our vocabulary. It's just not supposed to work that way.
Disclaimer: Okay, okay, okay. In case you didn't know, I am full-on joking about this. This post is me totally speaking against my own personal beliefs on where women stand in society today, I just wanted to try to speak of something with the dry humour and sarcasm I seem to speak fluently in. The purpose of this was mainly to poke at the many stereotypes set upon women these days. As a feminist, it's about time to realize that these standards are getting old.

INTERIOR: Bedroom Goals
Hello, May!
(Technically May happened 10 days ago but I'm still just very glad that it's May, so... Anyway.)
It's been a whole month since I last posted anything because lately, I haven't got around to really constructing a post that I found inspiring. I would literally skim through a bunch of different websites and just stare at my blog and still- nothing. But then, I realised I've never written anything on my blog that focused on home decor or interiors or anything like that, and judging from the last time I was at Ikea, it turns out that these things seemed to fascinate me.
I started thinking about how I'll be leaving for uni next year (let's not talk more about that) and that means I'll be picking out an apartment, and I'll be moving in it, and I'll be living alone for the next 3 to 4 years. Maybe more if I end up finding a job there (I really hope I do!). I thought about the freedom of choosing my own furniture and managing my apartment the way I'd like it. So my mind drifted to those really gorgeous bedrooms I see everyday on Tumblr and Pinterest. I decided to compile a list of the types of bedrooms that I'd normally fall in love with.
1. Minimalist Bedrooms
Realistically, I consider myself the very opposite of a minimalist. I'm still trying to become more of a minimalist with how I live, sure, but judging from the mess that is my bedroom now, I might as well be called a maximalist. I keep everything, put everything everywhere, it's honestly sickening.
One day, I'm fully determined to live a minimalist lifestyle, and my bedroom should definitely show it. I always find myself falling head over heels in love with clean, white bedrooms with only a small number of furniture. Give it a bed, a nice bedside table, a drawer and a full-length mirror, and that's it! Maybe even a small bedside table. The idea is to spare as much room as possible, on the floor and on the walls.
I like the idea of having a really simple bed but with a bunch of pillows and really comfortable covers on it. I also like the idea of sunlight streaming in and giving wayy to a crisp, light feeling. If I had this type of bedroom, I'd probably stop my habit of being a hoarder and just fall in love with it entirely.
2. Wall Murals
Okay, for real though, this is one of the coolest ideas to ever surface when it comes to interiors: Murals! I am so awestruck by these wall murals I would literally die if I ever witnessed one in person. Pictured above are some gorgeous examples of what it'd look like if your bedroom wall displayed a wide display of a landscape, or just art in general. Not only is it astonishingly beautiful, but it gives your room depth.
The only problem that could come from this is that it may not look entirely peaceful to sleep in. When it comes to bedrooms, plain walls are usually my thing because it just gives a sense of safety that surrounds my bed instead of being overwhelmed by wallpaper patterns or anything. But I can't help it. A mural would look hella rad too, you guys.
3. Brick Walls
The third and final type of bedroom I'd love? One that has brick walls. Oh my God, I would literally die. (Is it embarrassing that I fangirl so much over pretty bedrooms? Perhaps.)
When I see brick walls, I instantly love them. I don't know how to describe it, but I seem to feel that it gives sort of a New-York-vibe to it. I don't know. Brick comes in many different forms and colours, but my favourite includes the normal type (colours that range from mixes of light brown and red) and white (because wow, who would not love white brick you guys).
If bedrooms were people, a touch of brick would be the thing that keeps them grounded. It's subtle but completely changes the entirety of the room's atmosphere. I can't explain this much further. I just love it, I do.
---
There you have it, my first ever interior-inspired post! I have very little to no knowledge about how interiors work (as you can probably tell) but I hope you liked this little inspiration post I put together.
I'll write again soon.
LIFE: Long Distance Relationships
distance (n.)
An amount of space between two things or people.
relationship (n.)
The way in which two or more objects, concepts, or people are connected; the state of being connected.
Ta-daaa. Let's talk relationships. Writing about something personal can be tricky sometimes. You don't want to give too much information, but you want to share just enough in the hopes of making a difference to the people reading this. I don't know how anyone could find this post "inspiring" but at least I hope it helps in some way.
Here's a small update: Currently, I'm in a relationship with someone who lives 468 miles away from me (thanks, Google.) It's a long story. But thankfully, we're not separated by oceans or continents. No time difference, only different cities.
My friends ask me how I "survive", and a few has told me I'm "strong". A few also said that it's "romantic", or "wow, it's just like in the movies!" Stuff like that. It's flattering and hilarious, but I don't think I've ever told anyone about how it actually feels to be a part of it. So for this post, I decided to get real. In all honesty, here are a few things I can say.
How Distance Helps
Technically, distance has a way of bringing you closer. The science is that communication is what makes a relationship, and the same goes with trust. Distance puts pressure on both these things. When you're far apart, it makes you constantly want to re-connect. You text, you call, or you tell each other stories everyday like a daily life report. With the distance, your relationship is anything but shallow. It's not sitting together in nice cafes or driving together to malls, but it purely comes from talking and listening. A level of understanding that goes deeper than the surface.
It also forces you to be independent. You know those people who kind of just go missing after being in a relationship because they just go on dates all the time? Well, I will never be one of those people. Being away from them means there's room for you to spend time with your friends and family. It gives you space to grow, and to not miss out on what life has to offer. You don't cling to them all the time, which in some ways, just keeps you sane. It's hard, but it gives you balance.
The Hard Side
But how do you make it work? The first thing is, you have to be with someone who makes it seem easy. Someone who checks in on you and asks how your day was. Someone who makes effort and doesn't take you for granted. For example, someone who would ride on a train for 3 hours just to come and spend time with you when you're traveling in a city near his. Those kind of people.
I gotta say, long distance feels like a constant countdown. Except you're not sure when the timer's going to end. You take it day by day without fully knowing when you'll see each other again, and once you do, time flies a little too quick and it's a tough, bittersweet goodbye before you know it. That's when the timer resets, and the countdown starts over, to another day where you'll hopefully get to see them again. (Keep your feelings to yourselves, people.)
What happens when the person you genuinely care about is so far away from you? You appreciate their presence more than anything. You start to acknowledge all the little things, like simply having them beside you. Hearing their voice becomes something rare, and seeing them in person feels nearly impossible. Well technically, without a ticket, it is.
But you try. You try your best to make the most out of it. It's not going to work if only one person is doing all they can. Both sides need to understand that they need to try to make it work together. Make time and stay honest. You don't demand, you just give. Because I guess that's how love is supposed to work. (Right?)
The Heart
So I haven't told you about my actual story now, have I? That's because I don't know how to tell it properly. I've only been experiencing it for about a month, but I can honestly tell you that aside from all the hard stuff I mentioned earlier, somehow, it's worth it.
We make it work, one way or another. We've promised to tell each other everything, and aside from the hard stuff, he makes it seem easy. We text each other everyday, and make calls when we can. He gets it when I'm busy, and I get it when he is. There are plenty of things that he does, from the small things (like a "good morning" text already waiting on my phone every time I wake up), to the big things (like riding a train all the way to Jakarta to see me.)
I can't find the words to describe what it was like to actually see him. It was like knowing that all your patience finally paid off. This was the person you'd tell everything to. The person who understands you and makes you laugh, and probably knows all the little things about you. To be able to finally sit with him and chat, or just walk with him in a big mall that we knew nothing about, or even sit in a theatre and watch a movie that bored us to death, it was more, more, more than enough.
John Green once said, "you can never love someone as much as you can miss them." I don't know if that's true, but I think it's okay. You can miss them when you're alone, miss them when you talk to them, miss them when you see photos of the last time you were together. Miss them immensely, or sometimes just a little bit. Allow yourself to miss them. Maybe it's just your heart's way of reminding yourself that you love them still.
---
And that's it! I don't know if any of this made sense. This post was long, but I guess it's enough. I'm actually in the process of making a vlog from my Jakarta trip, but the compiling and the editing are going to take quite a while. So I chose something slightly easier for now. Stay tuned!
If you happen to have any questions, or if you share the same experience, or if you simply have anything to say, feel free to leave a comment! I'd love to hear from you.
Good talk.
Disclaimer: I extracted a lot of what I wrote from Jenn Im's video here, in case you were wondering, because I didn't know how to accurately put my feelings into words, so I somehow found that as a source of inspiration. Don't judge. K bye.
